Progressive imaging centers have evolved, and many now utilize advanced
technologies to break down the barriers associated with producing quality
reproductions and continuous-tone imagery from electronic files.
It's now possible to generate exhibit-quality 8' by 4' display graphics from digital artwork files that consist of high-resolution scans, complex linework, and text. Today, the designer can truly call the shotsmaking all of the decisions about content, color, and layoutright at their own workstation.
Some service bureaus can also produce electronic printing or "E" printing, a process in which electronic files are printed on an electronic
press directly via raster image processing (RIP). The final pieces are of good quality and are produced in less time because no film separations are needed. "E" printing is ideal for short-run printing jobs and offers considerable savings over large sheet-fed or web presses for limited quantity press runs of as few as 25 or as many as 500.
