Selecting Appropriate Usage Rights

Typically, buying the rights means one-time usage. The artist, as an independent contractor, retains ownership of the original artwork, as well as all rights to its subsequent reproduction. If you wish to use the illustration more than once (several printings of a brochure); in more than one way (as a brochure cover and part of a print ad); over a period of time (a series of ads throughout the year); or if you wish to keep the original art (framed for display), this should be discussed and agreed upon with the artist before work begins. Keep in mind that these added uses will incur additional fees.
