Copywriting/Editorial

Copywriters write and edit text (often referred to as "copy") to communicate sales and other vital messages for clients. Marketing copy can consist of text for print material (brochures, mailings, reports, etc.) or electronic media (Websites, CD-ROMs, etc.). Copywriters also develop positioning statements, brand names, slogans, jingles, captions, etc.

Professionally written copy can sum up the benefits of a client's product or service in a lively, persuasive tone, in easy-to-read terms. Professional copywriters can also eliminate jargon that might confuse or discourage potential customers. More important, a copywriter can develop a persuasive call to action (i.e., a statement urging the reader to buy the product, take specific action, etc.).

Copywriting shouldn't be confused with copyrighting, which is a legal process. To copyright a piece of copy is a sound business decision that provides some protection against other people or organizations using your copy without your consent.
